Design Inspiration

This Bee is inspired by the Industrial Revolution, which began in Manchester. The symbol of Manchester, the worker bee, is transformed into a mechanical steam-machine. With a mixture of pistons, gears, gauges and valves, its well-oiled cogs are encased in metal and brass. Painted in typical bee colours, Industrious has the look of the engines that revolutionised Manchester and the world.

The Museum tells the story of where science met industry and the modern world began. One of the first global, industrial cities, Manchester’s rise, decline and resurrection is shown through collections that capture life over the last 200 years. Its mission is to inspire visitors, by exploring how ideas can change the world, from the industrial revolution to today and beyond.
